Yes, there is enough space/movement to remove the rear diff without touching wheels.
You have to disconnect the exhaust pipe (it is stainless, I was able to do mine with 146k mile).
The diff is about 40 pounds, you do not want to leave it hanging on the drive shafts, and it will not be terribly stable on vehicle jack....
Removing the diff is relatively easy and straightforward.
