It makes the bike more ridable, they can pull a higher gear through the corner, instead for shuffling through a few gears to try to keep the power flowing.

The Ducati has proven to be the top of the Super Bikes for a few years, due manly to the Desmodromic valve gear.

A good buddy of mine races a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and taught me a lot about the differences in riding a I-4 versus a V-Twin. He's used to the I-4 for racing, but said he would take my V-Twin for day to day riding in a heartbeat. I'd like to spend some more time on a Triumph. I rode a Speed Triple but didn't like it much. A Sprint ST would be my first choice, and if they ever put the 1050cc Triple in a sportbike like a Daytona. The 955i was a nice bike, but the current 675 is lighter and faster.
