Retail value on a '92 in decent shape with those miles is over 6800. The dealer will always try to get as close to that as possible.

Trade in on it is way low, probably less than 3000. That means the dealer, whichever way they got a hold of the car, was only set down around 3000 for it... They have to make money on it, it's a business, but I'm sure you could probably get it for $500 to $1000 over what they paid, if you negotiate hard enough.

Also, cash speaks louder than words. If you are looking to finance it through them, don't expect them to lower it much. If you show up with cash or an already approved loan through your own bank/credit union, I'm sure they'll be much more flexible with pricing.

And to those telling you they paid 2500 for theirs, they either got real lucky, or they had access to an auction or wholesale resource. If through private sale, the person selling it was either desperate to sell or didn't care how much they got. Don't expect a dealer to let it go for anywhere close to that when they're asking 5400. Very rare a dealer will go anywhere less than 35% what they're asking for a used car.
