I have always had the boots replaced, never the axles. I'm on my 6th or 7th set of boots on the front outers and have never had an issue with the joints in 230,000 miles.

The shop I use will clean out the joints and install fresh grease when they replace the boots. Costs about $180 for front axle service and new boots.

I think the rears have only been done once or twice at the most.

Just my 2 cents.
