As far as the Blizzaks go I have used them in the past and they work well. I saw that Toyo has a studless tire that has crushed walnut shells impregnated in the rubber compound. As far as studded tires go I think they aren't safe unless used on ice or packed glazed snow. On dry pavement they tend to provide less traction and are prone to wheel spin or skidding.
