The ABS wasn't the culprit, it was your unfamiliarity with the car. I knew my SVX had ABS since the first day I owned it, and tried to familiarize myself with its behavior in all weather conditions as soon as an opportunity presented itself. Better to risk misjudgement of the car's stopping abilities in an empty parking lot than half way through the trunk of the car in front.
