My rear left wheel has a bit of play in it (it moves a little bit laterally). Associated with this play is the sound of a scrape that is speed sensitive. I hesitate to say it's wheel bearing because it's not a roar (like my last wheel bearing was), but more of a scraping sound. I pulled off the rotor and it doesn't seem that anything is scraping. However, the shaft will move slightly back and forth up and down (perpendicular to its axis). Is this bad bearing or bad CV?

Thats ok, about 60% of members have a Legacy/Liberty as a back up car.
If the wheel has movement in and out, the axle nut is loose, or the bearings have worn out. The bearing is a double taper roller bearing that is loaded up by the axle nut, If the nut is torqued up to specs, there can not be any movement.
