So far some tools I have unexpectedly used to open the fuel tank are: a hammer, pliers, flat head screwdriver used as a chisel and a harness pry, a razor to cut a very stubborn hose, and a vacuum.
Immediately I understood why a member previously indicated the inside to be "a mess".
Stories of the presence of fumes are a bit... exaggerated.
