I've taken it to a tranny shop and they removed it. It has 'twin turbo' written on it with felt-tip pen. Obviosly it is not the original trans, and the shop thinks its out of a twin turbo Legacy.

My Questions: Are the SVX and Legacy twin turbo trans identical or similar enough for a swapout?

Are the gear ratios different?

I've been given a cost of about NZ$4200 for the rebuild with cooler fitted.
Gid'ay Mate, Sorry to hear of your troubles. As far as I know the Twin Turbo is not the same box. It has more clutch plates than the standard Legacy but uses the transfer clutch instead of the epicyclic diff that the JDM SVX does. The other difference is the final drive ratio, 4.11 on the Legacy 3.7 on the JDM. SVX.

May be the box has a 4.11 in the front diff and a 3.7 in the back diff, to cause a mis match that has burned up the transfer clutches. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.

Was the box changed in NZ or did it come from Japan like that? If the "Twin Turbo" was written in English, it may have been done in NZ and the original box may be still around. There is a Member in Canberra that is doing a 5 speed swap, his auto box may be ok. Check the "Down Under" section for "E"

Not the best news, but you are probably use to that with a SP250.

Harvey.
