2 or 3 Os sensors, OBD1 or OBD2 for 1997 Canadian LSi?

I have a 1997 (build Oct 96) Canadian spec SVX that has very few problems. In the course of correcting them both my Service Manager and I have some confusion.

After much deep-diving research in the Forums I 'was' under the impression that I have 2 pre-cat O2 sensors and Subaru added a 3rd after the cat for 1997.
I was also under the impression that 1997 SVXs with the OBD connector behind the door on the dashboard were OBD2. Those with the connectors under the kick panel are OBD1?

Perhaps all of this only applies to California spec SVXs?

The Mechanic's first OBD check for the engine light on was done using OBD1 after he found and fixed a broken wire on the dash connector. It was slightly less than conclusive and at $89/hr I'd like to give him as much help as possible. I was in having the AC system evaluated.

Please, someone who knows for sure or has hands on experience please set me straight on this puzzling contradiction. Thank you.
