Sounds like you've been shafted (no pun intended).
Just a guess, but sounds like the plastic strip that runs up the shaft is either broken or has slipped its cog. Again, just a guess. If it isn't broken, I believe it's easy to reattach or, to put back on track. If it's stripped, then, that's another problem altogether.
I certainly hope, however, that my guess is wrong and that it ends up sorting itself out.
