I checked. The arrows are now going in the right direction. I guess the previous owner F***** up the car when he had the wheels on
wacky, and I probably made it worse by putting all the wheels on backwards! Luckily I never took the car up to a very high speed - most of my canyon carving was done at 40-65 mph.

It's an easy check - just look at the sidewall of the tires and see if they have an indicated rotational direction (and that it corresponds to the forward direction for your car! ) Unless the previous owner went to one of those high buck shops and had the tires balanced on the car, the wheel/tire combinations' balancing is independent of their location on the car.
