Well, Wiz...I see you've wasted no time testing the limits of your new SVX!!! ;^)

Your first task is, indeed, to trash your radar detector....Whistler isn't the best one around. Not only is it not all that sensitive, it radiates enough radio interference on its own to let Officer Bob Speed know you're coming. Spend the bucks ($399) and get a Valentine One...not only is it FAR more sensitive, it tells you which direction the scan is coming from, and more importantly, it does so without sending out enough spurious radiation of its own to broadcast your arrival. The Valentine One was invented by the same guy who did the legendary Passport and Escort while working for someone else. Car and Driver has tested detectors several times and the Valentine always comes up the winner. I used an old Passport for years and never had any trouble with detecting radar at a distance (assuming it wasn't the "instant-on" variety), and I just clamped the thing to the cowl over the instrument panel.

Second, welcome to the world of "instant-on" radar. In an effort to defeat detectors, radar manufacturers have, for years now, made radar systems that don't actually transmit until Officer Bob Speed aims it at you and pulls the trigger. Unless he happens to be checking some other unfortunate soul ahead of you, and your detector catches some of the over-splatter, you're nailed before you have a chance. In a high-traffic area where lots of dirvers are being checked, a good detector will give you a bit of warning, but if it's just you and Smokey, you're cooked.

Third, no brand of radar detector will do you any good in the presence of LIDAR, a laser-based speed measurement system that is essentially an "instant-on" system using infrared light instead of radio frequencies.

Fourth, have you considered observing the speed limit? ;^)
