My insurance company told me there was some law (or whatever) that was in place if that any car over 7 years of age has (what they consider) 75% of damage, it is automatic a total loss... totaled.
For the same damage, most places look at around $1,800 - $2,200 for fixing this and the bumper, with the piece, time/labor and paint involved... it adds up quickly. It's not exactly fair by any means.
Totaling should not be based on value as you are insuring your car for 100% but as to whether or not the car can be fixed drivable again, which in most cases, it is. (Especially in cases like this).
We, the consumer... always get screwed.
