Thumper, you were taught well. This IS the correct procedure. The piece of "bare metal" I usually use, is the engine pull hook, attached to the motor. Otherwise (since I don't recall one on the svx) any bracket will do. Luckily, I haven't had to jump mine yet.

I am also more liable to use the "dangerous" method of attaching to the negative post of the dead battery. It ain't the best practice, but, I've never blown a battery or burnt anyone's alternator up, yet.
