Do you mean the front diff, rear diff, or both?
I have never done any work on them, but by all reports on here it is do-able.
On top of the page you will see "Old Lockers" Go into the locker of svxfiles. He has a picture or two in there. Have a look at the pics he has about a diff swap. [from standard US to 4.44]
Regards your question the USA got final drive of 3.54, which is a very high overdrive to suit their long highways.
All the rest of the world got 3.70, so your JDM and NZ models should be exactly the same.
