Shade tree mechanic... a person that worked on cars at his home when I was a kid. Nobody had a garage to put a car in to work on a car.

Just got the car under a big shade tree to stay out of the sun and shade from the heat. (Texas)

Shade tree mechanics all had a supply of bailing wire that they used to tie everything to keep the car parts held together.

As times changed the future generations graduated to duct tape!

More recently shade tree mechanic has acclimated to the age of plastics. Consequently, plastic ties are doing the job previously accomplished by bailing wire...
then duct tape...
now plastic ties!!!
