i bought my SVX sight unseen, although the P.O. was brutally honest and e-mailed me about 30 photos of every miniscule little scratch or stone chip. i guess i was kinda lucky to find such a nice one.
i would get a pre-purchase inspection done on ANY used car, whether it was from across the country or down the street (got one for $60 at a Subaru dealer.) depending on what the inspection turns up, it can give you some more bargaining leverage, or send you running away as fast as you can. if the seller won't agree to an inspection, then that's a warning sign right there. good luck with your search, but don't fall in love with every SVX you run across (although it might be hard!)

<<The only item they didn't replace was the waterpump and around 80K it froze up and broke the timing belt.>>

BTW, it a good idea to replace the H2O pump when you do the timing belt as a "while-you-are-in-there" item because the labor isn't that much more and on some cars (SVX?), the increased tension from a new belt will cause the pump to fail.
