I recommend
CutePDF. It will install a virtual printer in your Printer Folder, basically you go print the document (selecting the "CutePDF printer") and as soon as you click "print" it will ask you where to save the PDF file.
Alternatively, you can use
OpenOffice.Org, it's small, fast, very powerful, quite compatible with M$ Office formats and has built in PDF Exporting.
