Really a true 4x4 system is better. The problem with an AWD like ours is if one of the wheels gets air, it spins while the rest of the wheels sit dead. A real 4x4 woudl always have 25% of the power at each wheel, so you'd truly never get stuck.
At least, that's what my old toyota 4Runner was like.
