That is the reason I never want to buy a used car, even though that's typically all I can afford to do. Just leads to to the same thing I say to everyone lookin at cars.... don't trust anyone.
Even at the Subaru dealership itself, I got under my SVX and inspected every last bit of it. I'm way too mistrusting and paranoid. You can only save yourself.
