I know this is an older thread, but wanted to say thanks to SURTEES for the tip.

The person I bought the car from thought having to press the button twice to open it was a fault and told me of the 'give it a bit of a nudge' thing. Between finding out through a Subaru TSB that nope, it was
meant to work that way and this thread, I now have a perfectly smooth opening sunroof.
Like SURTEES it took quite a while to clean. Eventually found moving it along the tracks every now and then dislodged bits of gunk I couldn't get to. I think it'd probably pay to do it again shortly 'cause I can already see more old bits of ick that've been dislodged.
