Success! Transmission is mounted to engine block, and flywheel is bolted to torque converter. I bought an 800 lb capacity transmission jack from harbor freight and the difference b/t it and the ATV jack was night vs. day. The ability of the transmission jack to adjust the angle of approach on both planes was invaluable. Now my biggest problem is deciding what to do with the spare parts I have laying around. (Old transmission, rear end, tranny jack, ATV jack, torque converter from legacy, ect...) I will have to finish this project on Monday, but it is nice to have the hard part over with.
