They probably didn't take anything because someone came by. Thieves will often leave perfectly good stuff if they get scared off (they are, by nature, cowards).

As far as a better alarm, that will do well against casual criminals. For career criminals, I would say get a $50 comprehensive deductible (or glass coverage, if your insurance does that, but comp will cover other things like theft, vandalism, hail, etc.). You can usually get comp without collision (I assume this is uncovered or you have astronomical deductibles).

If you have a $50 comp deductible, you can just pay it and let your insurance company worry about the $150 glass and 8 hours of labour BS. Maybe not helpful for this loss, but it could be for future ones.
