If it is just piston slap, it can be lived with for quite some time. My silver has had it ever since I bought it nearly 2 years ago. Since that time, the trans blew the high clutch and I continued using it as a city car but also had to make a few short highway runs at times where cruising at 55 mph ran the motor at about 4500rpm and maybe a little higher as its been awhile since I've driven it. As so-cal said, it could just be a lifter in which case there are a few tricks that could work.
