You can tow a VTD for a short distance and at a low speed. A longer distance at speed will give the centre diff. a hard time, "but destroy it," is rather an exaggeration.

However, if a late model Australian model VTD is involved, and a claimed change in the C solenoid valve is correct, the centre diff. clutch could certainly suffer in a big way, depending on a build up of pressure.
