Antenna replacement -- bad reception

I replaced my mast as per how-to instructions. The reception on AM stations is very poor but OK on FM. When replaceing the mast, there is a cylindrical tube through which the main mast goes through. The antenna lead contacts that cylinder. On that tube are two cutouts. I was wondering if these should be bent in during installation so that it contacts the main mast. It seems to make sence that there shouldbe contact with it to pull signical to radio. I did not do it but before I through all the trouble of removing the antenna once more, I wonder if anyone has any idea whether this would help?
