OK, I'll have a go at replacing the unit in one of my cars this weekend.
If by some miracle it works I can give you full instructions. I have no guarantee the repair will fix the problem, but I am 100% certain the bad capacitor is the primary cause of the control board degradation.
We'll wait and see.
