The thing is: optical keys, voice recognition, biometric scanners and combination keypads will do nothing to make the car more secure. It's like putting a big heavy padlock on a door that's made of thin cardboard. As Kuoh said, there are only 4 wires in the ignition harness and a car thief will know how to short them and bypass whatever front-end you have put in place.

Even cars with aftermarket alarms and immobilisers get stolen. When you look under the dash it's usually easy to see which wires have been diverted and you can just join them up the way they were originally. Such devices are really just an illusion of security and will not stop a thief that knows his trade.

I strongly suggest that you don't remove the steering lock. It takes a lot more effort to break a metal lock than to short a few wires. I have heard that it's even more difficult to break if you make sure to turn the wheel until it clicks every time you park.
