I'm right in the middle of the same problem. I am shopping for a 1997 Outback transmission with a 4.44:1 final drive and a 4.44:1 limited slip rear differential to match. The gurus here have told me it is a direct, plug/play swap. You can also do the same with the 4.11:1 box and diff from non-outback Legacies, Foresters, Imprezas, etc. There may be some years that aren't 100% compatible (bolt patterns?). 1997 seems to be the sweet spot, and the prices I've found are reasonable - $500 - 800 for the trans and $150 - 300 for the rear diff.

svxpert has a 4:44 box and diff available with very low miles. I'm interested in that but will have a hard time getting to NJ to get it. Look him up.
