My car has an intermittent fault in the tacho, similar to what you have described. It also throws an crank position sensor error. So it seems the two are related.
Subaru dealer didn't seem too concerned that crank position sensor was faulty. It explained that if it gave up completely the car might be hard to start when hot (or cold, can't remember which it was).

In mine this is a frustrating fault, because my speedo doesn't work above 50 km/h and so I rely on my tacho to guessitmate my speed.

I'd better fix one or the other.
