This is most prominent when I'm using a cassette tape adapter to hook my portable minidisc player up to the stereo. Any ideas what could be causing it? I'm not exactly dead-set on making it stop.. maybe one day I'll buy a new head unit with a "line in" on the front or something

Adam,
This is indicitive of a "dirty" connection somewhere. You could try cleaning your battery posts and your grounds (body, alt and engine block). You could also try cleaning your radio ground wire (supposing you're using the stock unit). If you remove the panel under the e-brake and look slightly forward on the driver's side of the tranny tunnel, you'll see a black wire, attached with a phillips screw. That's your radio ground. After that, it could be any number of grounding paths.
That's my experience, anyway. Hope you get it sorted.
