I noticed the same thing when I first bought my 96.It's the stabilizers in the door.The inners are easy to fix(recover).The outers are tricky to get out. About 9-10 bucks ea.Look at them as being sacrificial.A guy who tints glass told me tinting over the scratches made them look worse,sounds like he was right from your experience.
