get an aftermarket radio with an aux input. the stock speaker system sounds very good (at least until the paper cones deteriorate at some point.) i have a powered Kicker Substation with the stock speakers, and the sound is excellent. the stock Panasonic is OK, but a newer quality aftermarket radio will sound even better.

as far as portable MP3 player connections go, an FM transmitter will sound the worst, followed by cassette adapter, and then RCA inputs.
