the old man says black steel is ok but you could use galvanized as well. He is recomending a 3/4" pipe comming to a T with a 3/4 dirt leg to a 3/4" gas cock. Then to a 1/2" reducer coupling then 1/2" to the heater. Use all Maliable couplers to stay to code. Good luck

PS the dirt leg should stop at a 3/4" nipple and a plug. The dirt leg needs to come stright down to catch and **** in the line. a 6" nipple should be sufficient for the leg
