Did it actually come from inside the water pump?
Could it be something that came from the outside the engine? Maybe even some debris that the car picked up off the road, that then fell off then you where draining it, or may be something that stuck on the outside after some other work. It kind of looks like the metal part of of a seal, or something like that.
My first Subaru was a 1990 Legacy, which I bought in 1996 for $500 because it wouldn't start. The own had skipped on the major service and the timing belt had come off because come of the bearing in the pulleys has exploded, ball bearing every where, and some bits of metal, like of like that, but I don't think they where as large as 5".
