First thing to do is get a multi-meter and measure between the alternator output post and a ground on the body. Or if that's difficult to get to measure between the clamps on the battery. voltage should read around 14v and even at idle should be above 12-13. if not then your alternator is no good and need to be replaced, if yes then the battery is shot and need to be replaced.
