Vibration

I have had a vibration in the car for quite some time. I originally thought it was the front axles. I replaced both of them when a boot cracked open. The vibrations seemed to get a little better but didn't go away completely. Yesterday I noticed something that clearly was not my imagination. I got onto a highway and, while accelerating, it was vibrating quite a bit. Then, suddenly, it got way better. It seemed to happen when I backed off on the accelerator but subsequent attempts to hit the gas did not bring back the vibration. I was feeling it both in the steering wheel and the whole car. When it got better, there was just a slight vibration in the car, or so it seemed.

Any ideas? Car still idles pretty good and gas mileage on the highway at 70mph was about 27. Seems like it is running well. U-joint maybe? Steering rack issue? I do get some burning smell that snells like burning ATF but no major spots on the driveway.
