The continued swelling and redness of Tom's hand was determined to be an infection, not inflammation.

His doctor had given him antibiotics earlier and was moderating the redness. She admitted him to the hospital this afternoon to put him on his first round of IV drip antibiotics. He went through 2 bags before they stopped for the evening around 8PM

Rather than discharge him and re-admit him again tomorrow, They are keeping him overnight and resuming another round of IV antibiotics tomorrow.

He may go home after that, depending on what the doctor says, or they may keep him over another night.

If needed, I will be back in Cumberland tomorrow to take care of his dogs and see what else he needs. He will call me in the morning to give a progress report. Will report what I find out.

UPDATE: SATURDAY MORNING: 11:00AM

They started OT on his second round of IV antibiotics (2 bags) around noon. His surgeon came in later in the afternoon to evaluate his situation.

I have a feeling she will want to keep him an additional night and do another round of IV's tomorrow (since it has only been about 18 hrs. since he stated taking them)

There is a teenager who lives right around the corner who went to Tom's earlier this morning. The dogs know him and he fed them, let them out for exercise, etc. and will come back later secure the house for tonight. He will come back tomorrow to do this again. Tom tried to contact him yesterday, but did not get a call back until early this morning. This greatly relieved his anxiety.

Hopefully a weekend full of antibiotics and wound care will jump-start Tom's healing. The still has another surgery to go through in about a month. That would be only a couple of days before Reading. I told him to ask the doctor if he could postpone it for a week, until after Reading.

I will be out there whenever he needs me to, just over 2 hours away.

UPDATE: SATURDAY EVENING: 9:45PM

Tom is spending tonight in the hospital. They are starting him on a third round of IV antibiotics (1 bag) around midnight. Tomorrow they will do another (fourth) round of antibiotics (2 bags) for about 2 hours, starting at noon. I don't know if they discharge patients in the afternoons on weekends. They may just keep him Sunday night and discharge him Monday morning. His neighbor is still looking after his dogs.

He said while his hand is still red and somewhat swollen, some of the swelling seems to have gone down and his hand is not as dark red and "angry" as it has been.

UPDATE: SUNDAY AFTERNOON: 5:00PM

As of now, Tom has just finished his most recent 4 hr. round of IV antibiotics( 2 bags) which started at noon. He saw his doctor today and she is keeping him one more night and discharging him tomorrow. He will get another infusion of antibiotics (1 bag), starting at midnight.

Think it's going to be a "White Russian" night in Wiley Ford tomorrow...

UPDATE: MONDAY EVENING: 10:00PM

Final infusion of 2 bags of antibiotics began around noon and then discharged and home around 5:00PM.

Party at Toms house. Two very happy dogs, four white Russians (for an even happier Tom), food from his own kitchen, and watching the History channel on his own TV. Did I mention a private room once again?

Will probably continue on oral antibiotics and painkillers for a while.
