better option is putting and ej25 block between some ej22 heads to raise compression, then can just use the ej22 stock ecu and wiring harness etc.

Just to toss in a bit more fun, an EJ251 block with EJ18 heads provide a ton of n/a power potential. Chris (yes, chris with the drift SVX and other fun projects) last I knew is running this type of hybrid on his rally impreza coupe.
As to your reliability talk, a HUGE problem with the Euro cars is they say 10k miles between oil changes. This is because they offer no cost maintenance for the first ~36k miles, so less oil changes, less money they're dishing out. That is the number one problem with the Audi 1.8t and even more so the transverse VW 1.8t (obviously that isn't in your discussion) and also a huge problem with the Volvo turbo charged engines. You're actually better off with either of those having 150k miles vs one with 50k. (case in point, my A4 had the oil pump changed at 55k miles for sludge and obviously now is at 250k and tons of abuse for the last 50k)
If you are prepared for the maintenance it takes, the Euro cars are plenty reliable. But the problem is, no one MAINTAINS cars anymore. They drive them, might do oil changes every 5k miles (with dyno oil) and that's it.
Anywho, that's all for now.
