most likely white silicone. it's a cheap sealant/lubricant that can help it go in easily while ensuring it doesn't leak. the o-ring is what is supposed to actually seal it so you could lubricate the seal with oil or wheel bearing grease and probably be ok. i prefer to not use any sealant on engine sensors unless really needed because it has the remote possibilities of interfering with the signal or destroying the case.
