Depends on how clean you want it...
It's common for people get some kind of spray foaming engine cleaner available at any auto parts store, spray it on a warm engine, let it sit for 20 minutes or so and then hose it off. It does OK but not great for all the nooks and crannies.
Do detail shops still steam-clean engines? That seems to work really well.
