Purpose of copper plate in MAF ??

During my recent debacle in Reno, I removed my MAF to check the solder connections inside to eliminate that possibility. During inspection, since I didnt have a soldering iron, I simply gently bent back the thin copper plate inside to check the solder connections on the board. It was only soldered on one side and didnt seem to be connected to anything besides the two or three soldering pionts connecting it to that one side. My car made it home fine, but now when I drive it again it has been acting weird, giving inconsistent power when accelerating. The ECU threw a code for the MAF (23), and im wondering if this copper plate has anything to do with it. I havent checked the harness yet but im still curious as to the function of this thin plate.
