I always assumed that JDM VINS were CXD or CXW followed by a sequential number. I tried entering some numbers at random on this site, and I can't find any JDM VINS less than CXD002001.

First I thought they must have started the numbering at 2001, but then I realised that my 92 cars are both 002xxx and my 94 car is 004xxx. So now I'm thinking that maybe the third digit indicates the model year. 2 for 1992, 3 for 1993, 4 for 1994 etc.

So my CXD002261 would be the 261st JDM SVX made in 1992.

EDIT: After a bit more testing, I discovered that some numbers are duplicated. What I mean is, there is a CXW002345 and CXD002345 with different details. But not all numbers are duplicated.
