A security system is good for deterring a casual thief; nothing more. For a professional, your only choices are good insurance or something like Lo-Jack.
Just my $0.02, but I used to work in insurance claims and had to deal with thefts all the time. If someone wants your car, and they know what they're doing, they'll get it. It's better to plan for the theft than try to prevent it (since prevention methods are pretty moot against a pro).
That being said, a security system certainly doesn't hurt anything (except maybe your wallet ).
