I'll look at my FSM but on the other subarus you drop the drive shaft, undo the two nuts to the rear diff cover. then place the jack under it to support it while you remove the front 4 bolts.

supporting the back of the car on a set of jacksands should be good enough, though for doing much work under a car I usualy use 4 stands and support the car level securely so that even if you get to yanking on it it won't fall off.
