Could be the reed valves. What did the gauges read? Should be ~30psi on the low side and ~150-250 on the high side at idle. (Actual readings will vary with ambient temperature, etc...) if you have like 60-80 psi on both sides of the compressor with the compressor running, your compressor is toast, assuming there is a full charge of refrigerant in the system. I've seen them have just enough in the system to keep the low pressure cutoff switch closed, but not enough for the compressor to circulate.

Would help a lot if you posted gauge readings :-) I have a nifty chart that shows you what the different gauge readings mean.
