Compression Check??

You might try to do a "Leakdown" if you can borrow the gauges (also available from Summit). It uses 100 psi air to pressurize the cylinder and the gauge measures the percentage of loss. Further the hissing will be out the breather (rings), intake (intake valves) or exhaust pipe (exhaust valves). The cylinder Has to have both valves closed and the vehicle locked so that it won't move (This will move a formula car across the garage). This won't fix anything but at least it will give you a better idea of what's wrong.
