Awhile back I looked over the drawings from the two different versions on SubaruParts.com.
It appeared to me that you could transplant a button and related parts (spring, etc.) from an earlier model into a later model. It looked like most of the mechanism just below the button stayed the same. But the drawings were too low-res for me to tell for certain.
With so many people doing 5MT swaps, there should be plenty of donor shift console guts out there to play with
