my guess is that your flexplate actually came loose from the TC this means that the engine will rev freely and the starter will spin the TC (but not the engine, as the TC isn't connected to the engine via the flexplate anymore). Make sure the mechanic checks to make sure the bolts didn't get wedged anywhere where they could come loose later and make things messy. My guess is that they all ended up on the highway (assuming they actually installed all of them in the first place).

p.s. you can see the flexplate bolts through the access hole at the top of the passenger's side of the engine -- there may or may not be a rubber stopper in the hole.
